Sustain Charlotte is a community-based nonprofit organization focused on inspiring choices that lead to a healthy, equitable, and vibrant community for generations to come.
We work with residents to advocate for the policies, practices, and funding needed to achieve the following: diverse and walkable neighborhoods with homes for families of all incomes; streets that are safe for walking, biking, using assistive devices, and driving; a fast, convenient, safe, and reliable public transit network (and less dependence on cars for transportation); more bike paths, parks, greenways, and nature preserves; and changes that support cleaner air and water.

Trees & Urban Heat
Urban heat is caused by paved surfaces and large buildings that absorb and emit extreme heat, especially during the summer months. One solution to this problem is growing and maintaining a robust urban tree canopy. Trees are an imperative part of sustainable urban design because they provide a cooling effect through shade and reduced impervious surface, which can lower temperatures up to 20 degrees!

Keep fighting the good fight! ✊🏽
Certain sections of Independence Blvd and Harris Blvd I would consider stroads.

Wow! I just love the greenway, great job Joseph!
I wish all the greenways connected it would be so nice if there was a way to connect McAlpines northern sections all the way to South Carolina with the Little Sugar Creek Greenway.
Wasn't there a vintage trolley or more that served Downtown Charlotte 11 years ago?
Agenda 21 new world order 🖕 🖕 🖕
This is very cool! Well Done
Thanks so much! We would love to do more things like these, maybe we can collaborate!
We'd love to collab!😄 @@sustaincharlotte
No helmet?
Hello Pat. Thank you -- a helmet is always strongly encouraged!
Link to the map data? I would like to add it to OpenStreetMap as well :)
Hello Alex! The map is undergoing some final edits with the help of our volunteers and ambassadors. Once finalized, we will be sure to notify you of its publication!
Kudos to Sustain Charlotte and AARP for sponsoring this project. With the expanding greenways in Charlotte this allows new and experienced cyclists to better understand the greenway amenities and wonderful design and hardscaping.
We definitely agree! We believe this map will be useful to individuals who bike, walk, and run along the greenway.
Great shots and very smooth camerawork, guys!
Thanks so much, John! :)

Loved this video!
Thank you for all the support, Bikeep!
@@sustaincharlotte 🤩 so welcome!
It is very sad to hear them speak of the inequities and segregation issues in the city, and yet, engaging ‘the community’ throughout the video shows one group of people voicing their concerns. Unfortunately, it is that group of people who is displacing historical neighborhoods with high-end new construction that drives up properly values, thereby pushing existing residents out. Throughout these historically African American communities you can plainly see this as breweries and bike trails are creating ‘sustainable’ communities for some. Charlotte city government has planned for this and implement it for over a decade and I thought this initiative would actually help protect the historical communities and revitalize them instead of destroying them. It’s quite evident throughout the video who is being served by these policies and who is being left behind but mentioned (not even shown) in any meaningful efforts to halt the destruction of previously affordable communities and any hope for integrated public education and housing throughout the county.
So pretty much Charlotte future is something similar to a current Seattle
Love to see the bike lanes on parkwood. Would like to see something more permanent than painted lines, paint is not infrastructure.
as long as we protect our history, old buildings and architecture.
Great example of how an office can be more sustainable. Every action matters.
Climate Change is a real problem that needs to be address urgently with the solutions we already have, we just now have to use them to protect all of our futures
While I enjoy hearing the motorist perspective on why protected bike lanes are important, why did Josh ride the bike on the sidewalk in Uptown Charlotte? Is my understanding correct that you can get fined for riding a bike on the sidewalk in Uptown Charlotte?
This is my sister, Meredith in this video. Some scumbag stole her bike yesterday... If you see the bike that is in this video (0:10 seconds is a still-shot) report it to the Charlotte Police Department immediately. A stolen report is on file with local law enforcement. Thank you, please help her find her bike!
those weak ass chains are just begging for it
jaboy charles
Much to your dismay, it is not practical to get around except by car for residents of Lake Norman so we will continue using our cars. Most of us cannot use public transit as buses are not practical or do not have routes available where needed, and light rail does not exist up here. Also, we will not move to Charlotte. Instead we will boycott Charlotte. Happy bike riding!
I know it's not a law to wear a bike helmet but should probably use them for best safety practices.
Nice, but wish you would have included a bus
+Larry Kopf we hear you! We will be sure and include a bus in our next video! Did not leave them out intentionally - we love the bus network and promote it often! Have you seen our 6 - Stories, 1 City - video series yet? It is focused exclusively on how critical transit is to Charlotte, especially our bus network!
